Meet the Band
About the band
ScrapHog was formed around June 2002 when Michael and Joe decided they had been friends for too many years to have not played music together. After a long search for a bassist the band got a commitment from Martin. Joe's brother Bob was then recruited and Shane joined in the fun the following year. They started regular practice and playing for their own private parties and cook outs. The band is now accepting local bookings.
Joe Cohen - Vocals, Guitar
Joe hails from Windsor Virginia. He started his musical career by forming a local band at age 16 when he purchased his first guitar (with high school friend Tim). His first guitar was purchased from his mother's Montgomery Ward catalog (a real gem). Joe sang in school and church choirs while growing up in rural Virginia. His music is greatly influenced by his exposure to Rock-a-Billy and the Delta Blues. His musical influences include Kansas, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Eagles and U2. Joe has performed in all types of bands over the years from Rock-a-Billy to Metal. After not performing music for over 10 years he is excited to be performing again. Joe is single with two children Kenny (20) and Erica (18). His hobbies include art, music, gaming and computers. His son is also taking on a passion for music playing the Bass guitar and forming his own band.
Michael Murray - Drums, Vocals
Michael is originally from Chesapeake Virginia. He met his future wife here in Richmond, got married and moved here to be with her. His father is also a drummer that has played in bands in the Tidewater area all his life. Michael began his musical "career" in 6th grade band. Of course he played drums like his father. He stayed in band all through school up to his senior year in High School. By that time he had his own drum set made from pieces his father gave him from his own set and cymbals his father and mother gave him for Christmas. One of his cherished memories includes getting to play his set at his own graduation with the entire band. He also played drums for the High School's Swing Choir. Michael is influenced by many styles of music from blues to jazz and of course rock. Some of his favorite bands include Rush, Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers, Dave Matthews Band and many others too numerous to mention. Michael has played with local blues bands, country rock bands, rock bands and others on a part time basis off and on throughout the years. He is now committed to bringing his talents along with his friends to this band hopefully to form something special.
Martin Graham - Bass guitar
Martin is originally from Newport News, where he played trumpet in school bands. After numerous run-ins with the neighbors while practicing the horn, he picked up the bass a few years ago. Martin is happy to be a member of Scraphog, considering he was kicked out of many other bands. Annette, Martin's lovely wife (and primary band groupie), gave him the bass for a birthday present. She won't admit it, but many believe she continues to rue the day. Martin's musical influence ranges from Jethro Tull to Johann Bach, Maynard Ferguson to Sublime, and let's not forget Gary P. Nunn. Properly medicated, Martin looks forward to being a productive member of society and perhaps even learning a few of the songs.
Bob Cohen - Keyboards, Vocals
Bob hails...well…. cabs some days…but seriously folks. Bob is Joes Brother, and he said, kind of like Lucy Ball to Ricky, “I want to be in the show!” The guys didn’t have anyone else willing to try to harmonize with them, so they let him in. with little or no experience (in anything) they gave him a keyboard (and a harmonica…oh GOD) and turned him loose on the semi-sober world of rock and roll. As of press time, no one has noticed he cant play OR sing….!!! Bob works out of a barn, lives wherever he can catch an empty bed and shows up for about half of the practices, so, until sumptin better comes along…here’s your keyboard, harmonica, strings, and screeching vocalist Bob Cohen.
Brian White - Lead Guitar, Vocals
Brian's musical journey began at the age of 12 when he started on bass guitar. His first guitar was a Harmony Red Electric Hollow body w/ a solid state 50 watt amp. Recently have taken up drums in another progressive rock band. His first inspiration was a 1981 Rolling Stones show in Hampton. Thoroughgood and his Destroyer's opened up for the Stones and it was Kieth Richards 38th birthday. Needless to say the Hampton Coliseum was one big party! He has played around Richmond solo and with various bands to include Exodus and Common Ground.
